Regalia Information

All PhD candidates must obtain the customized academic regalia (i.e., tam and gown) from the Barnes & Noble @ Georgia Tech bookstore. Please call the bookstore at 404.894.2516 to schedule your appointment to order your regalia. Your customized Georgia Tech PhD regalia is available for purchase or rental and must be ordered six weeks prior to your Commencement date. If you participate in the ceremony, your hood will be given to you as a gift from the Institute. If you cannot visit the bookstore six weeks before your Commencement date or have any additional questions, please email catalog@bks.gatech.edu.

Purchase Option

PhD regalia is available for purchase at the cost of $854 before tax. Each gown and tam—fitted to each student's individual needs—is an investment you will use your entire career in academia. Candidates can schedule their appointment for PhD gown orders by calling 404.894.2516. For your convenience, Barnes & Noble @ Georgia Tech offers three, six, and twelve-month payment plans to assist you in paying for your gown. The bookstore requests your final payment be made six weeks prior to Commencement to ensure enough time for each gown to be made and properly shipped. To start your payment plan today, please contact Barnes & Noble @ Georgia Tech.

Rental Option

PhD regalia can also be rented for $166.98 before tax. This price includes the rental of the gown plus the purchase of your tam, as tams are not rented to multiple users. A three-month payment plan for rentals is also available. Please contact Barnes & Noble @ Georgia Tech at 404.894.2516 for more information. Those who rent regalia will receive notification that their gown and tam have arrived at the bookstore. Graduates will then need to present either a photo ID or a copy of the original receipt in order to obtain their rented regalia. All rentals must be returned within three days of the Commencement ceremony, or graduates will be obligated to pay the full price of the regalia.

Line-Up Information

All doctoral candidates will line up in the Egyptian Ballroom at the Fox Theatre. Candidates will enter through the main entrance and proceed up one flight of stairs to the third floor. Please arrive no later than 6:00 p.m. in your cap and gown. Upon entering the line-up area, pick up a program from the table and form a line behind the marker for your college. You will receive your hood in the line-up area and will carry it with you to your seat.

School faculty representatives will distribute a numbered card to each candidate with his or her name and degree information. Candidates must line up in numerical order in accordance with the number that appears on the card. You must keep this name card until the card is given to a faculty announcer on stage. Please do not change places in line after the name cards have been distributed. When it is determined that everyone is ready to proceed, Commencement guides will lead the lines of candidates into the ceremony. Any candidate arriving after the processional has begun must immediately find an official from the Registrar’s Office for placement.

Recognition of Doctoral Candidates

After the degrees have been conferred, the president will ask the candidates to advance to the platform (one row at a time) to be recognized, proceeding to the stage. After shaking hands with the president, you will then proceed to the side of the stage where your advisor will be waiting to hood you. Afterwards, a complimentary photo of each candidate will be provided by Georgia Tech’s official photographer, GradImages, and the Georgia Tech Graduate Studies Office. You will then return to your original row and be seated.

Commencement is a special event for all involved. Please show respect for everyone who has come to share in the experience. Individuals who engage in inappropriate or disruptive behavior will be removed from the event. All cell phones and pagers must be turned off before entering the event facility and must remain turned off throughout the entire ceremony. Please show respect for other graduates by remaining in your seat until the end of the ceremony.

Absolutely no alcoholic beverages are allowed in or around the ceremony area. Anyone violating this code will be removed from the event.
