- Why don't ORP participants get credit for their unused sick leave like members of Teacher's Retirement?
- Teacher's Retirement is a defined benefit plan with a retirement benefit formula that is partially based on years of service. In contrast, ORP is a defined contribution plan that provides retirement benefits based on investment returns and contributions to the plan. Because of this fundamental difference in plan design, ORP participants cannot receive a service-based enhancement to benefits. However, as of July 1, 1999, the ORP matching fund rate has been increased for three years in a row. In fact, since ORP's inception in September 1990, the matching fund rate has increased from 4 percent to 8.79 percent. In other words, the Institute's contribution to ORP members' accounts has more than doubled since the plan's inception.
