Tech Tower
August 2008
G. Wayne Clough, who provided exemplary leadership as president of Georgia Tech for 14 years, stepped down earlier this summer to become secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. The chancellor and Board of Regents for the University System of Georgia have announced a nationwide search for a successor who can lead the university to even greater prominence and accomplishment.
Founded in 1885, Georgia Institute of Technology is a national and international leader in engineering, scientific and technological research and education. Ranked as the number seven public university in the nation, according to the 2008 rankings by U.S. News & World Report, Georgia Tech is located on a 400 acre campus in the heart of the city of Atlanta. The university enrolls more than 18,000 undergraduate and graduate students, employs more than 900 full-time instructional faculty, and has an annual operating budget in excess of $1 billion.
Over the past decade, overall research expenditures increased to nearly $475 million, while federal research expenditures increased 129 percent. Georgia Tech now ranks among the top five in research expenditures among universities without a medical school. In addition, Georgia Tech has an estimated $4 billion annual economic development impact within the state of Georgia.
Reporting to the chancellor of the University System of Georgia, the president is the chief executive and administrative officer of the university and is responsible for its effective leadership.
The next president will be expected to have impeccable integrity, strategic vision, exemplary communication and interpersonal skills, and demonstrated fund-raising ability. The selected individual will be committed to support of a world-class faculty, dedicated to students, supportive of technology transfer and have an appreciation for Georgia Tech's history and traditions. Georgia Tech is deeply involved with the Atlanta community and the state of Georgia and the president will be a leader in this engagement.
While applications and nominations will be accepted until a new president is selected, interested parties are encouraged to submit their materials to the address below by November 1 to assure optimal consideration.
