Update3.19.13:  We have received several inquiries as to the status of this year's IGERT solicitation.  The Georgia Tech Office of Government and Community Relations is monitoring the situation closely in partnership with their Washington DC consultants and to date, no new solicitation has been released for 2013.  We are hearing that we may not see another solicitation until this summer, which would be applicable for 2014.  NSF is currently rethinking their viewpoint on graduate education, so anyone on campus who would like to offer input to NSF on the IGERT program specifically or graduate education in general should contact Gail Spatt at spatt@gatech.edu  We will be happy to pass that feedback on through the appropriate channels.

The National Science Foundation is soliciting proposals in the Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) Program, which has been developed to meet the challenges of educating U.S. Ph.D. scientists and engineers with interdisciplinary backgrounds, deep knowledge in chosen disciplines, and technical, professional, and personal skills. The program is intended to establish new models for graduate education and training in a fertile environment for collaborative research that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries.  It is also intended to facilitate diversity in student participation and preparation, and to contribute to a world-class, broadly inclusive, and globally engaged science and engineering workforce.

Building upon the IGERT platform, the purpose of this IGERT solicitation (NSF 11-533) is to support new models in graduate education in which students are engaged in an environment that supports innovation to learn through hands-on experience how their own research may contribute in new ways to benefit society and to learn the processes for the successful implementation of such contributions. An institution may submit no more than one (1) proposal either as a single institution or as the lead institution in a multi-institutional proposal. The NSF Letter of Intent deadline is May 1, 2012, by 5:00 p.m.; the Full Proposal deadline is July 2, 2012. Since there is a limit on the number of proposals Georgia Tech may submit, the Office of the Executive Vice Provost for Research (EVPR) will work with a faculty committee to determine which proposal will represent Georgia Tech. Pre-proposals are due March 15, 2012. Please send completed pre-proposal materials as a single PDF to research@carnegie.gatech.edu, as follows:

Internal pre-proposals must address the following components of a full proposal (no more than 4 pages):

  1. Discussion of the intellectual merit and broader impacts of the proposed IGERT program
  2. Vision, goals and thematic basis
  3. Major research efforts
  4. Education and training
  5. Outline of organization and management plan

Please also include:

  • Budget Justification
  • 2 page biographical sketch of each PI/Co-PI
  • If a PI/Co-PI has previously submitted an IGERT proposal to NSF, please include reviews of those proposals, even if the theme has changed for this submission.
