How Are We Doing?

Special Events and Protocol Blog

We welcome you to read our top three blog posts from this past year and submit your ideas for future articles. We'll take a short hiatus, returning the week of August 20. Until then, have a wonderful rest of the summer.

Why Your Boss Wants You to Attend the ECN Workshop

Special Events and Protocol Blog

We encourage all those who have event coordination responsibilities, or those who are interested in expanding their skills, to register for our upcoming workshop. However, we know that departments’ budgets may still be strained and professional development monies limited, prompting you to show a return on investment for your supervisor. Not to fear – once you provide your supervisor with the reasons you should attend outlined below, he or she will wonder why you didn’t ask to attend sooner.

Barrelhouse Catering Tasting

Special Events and Protocol Blog

From time to time, we'll highlight some of the new services or products provided by our approved caterers and vendors so everyone can partake in the experience. For our first post, we had the pleasure of joining our friends at Barrelhouse for a tasting of their new catering menu.

What Will You Have?

Special Events and Protocol Blog

If you’re like me, you’re constantly concerned with the following three questions regarding meal selection: (1) Can I accommodate all special dietary needs; (2) Are my catering choices fitting (and tasty) for the event; and (3) Will I have enough to feed all my guests? I list a few tips to help you (and me!) answer all the above questions when choosing our next menu.

Events Web Resources 2.0: Blogs

Special Events and Protocol Blog

Back in March, I did a blog post on Event Web Resources. These websites are helpful tools, but not part of my daily read. I keep a long list of blogs (professional and personal) that keep me entertained and informed. Below are some of my favorite events blogs. I hope many of these can find a way into your reader as well.

Tips for a Tipper

Special Events and Protocol Blog

Throughout the past few months, we’ve focused a lot of attention on event management and planning. However, I don’t want to forget about the second piece to our name – protocol. I’ve recently joined a great organization named Protocol and Diplomacy International – Protocol Officers Association, who released a weekly message regarding tipping etiquette last March. Since we are entering vacation season, I thought this topic is very timely for event planners and travel aficionados alike.

A Mother’s Art of Making Things Special

Special Events and Protocol Blog

Albeit a few days after Mother’s Day, I thought this post might be a great opportunity to honor my mom for something she does best – making others feel special. My mom never misses an opportunity to ensure we feel loved. I’m inspired by my mom’s actions to see what I can do within our events to make others feel special and leave them with memories they won’t soon forget.

Summertime... and the Living is Easy

Special Events and Protocol Blog

Or, at least it’s supposed to be, right? But, if your department is like ours, you anxiously await the summer as a time to get ahead, only to realize it’s August 20 all over again. In an effort to help us combat this epidemic, we’ve created a summer project list that we hope will keep us on track and prepared for whatever the 2012-2013 academic calendar holds.

Revitalize Your Annual Event

Special Events and Protocol Blog

The end of last week marked the culmination of three of our large annual events. While the general purpose and goals remain the same year after year, we strive to bring a new, fresh approach to each every spring, which I admit isn’t always easy. However, this year, we thought about a few new ideas to bring new vitality and life into traditional annual events.

The Beginning of a Beautiful Friendship

Special Events and Protocol Blog

Who could forget Humphrey Bogart’s famous last line in Casablanca? Bogart’s character Rick Blaine gave us so many memorable quotes within the 1942 romantic classic, but his final one resonates most with me in reference to both my personal and professional life. While planning events here at Georgia Tech, I am continually inspired by how the development of “beautiful friendships” can significantly impact the outcome of my events and the guests’ experiences.
